Canada, it’s our time to lead
I just saw this on TV and thought I’d share. It’s a great commercial for The Globe and Mail.
It’s not hockey, the telephone or how we taught the world to type with our thumbs.
So what is Canada?
It’s not peacekeeping, insulin, or universal health care
If you ask Canadians what defines us, some might offer up a list of others’ past accomplishments. But what if, instead, 34 million of us step up, pledging new ones of our own? Things not yet done or dreamed, ventured not because they’re within our grasp, but exactly because they are beyond it – to be a nation neither afraid of success, nor skeptical of those who seek it.
So stop, look back at everything we’ve been given and then turn when you’re ready to begin.
Canada, it’s our time to lead.

The ad is certainly engaging, but annoying that the girl giving the little speech keeps flicking her eyes away from the camera…presumably to read the script.
Also, I just don’t get the line, “how we taught the world to type with our thumbs”…I’ve never used any Canadian’s thumbs to do my typing…nor am I likely to. But I’d settle for an explanation of its origins, please.

It’s a reference to the Blackberry, which was invented in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

I agree that the message is inspirational, but I too hate this ad and her eyes and voice both grate on my nerves. Instead of using one person who frankly comes across as the epitome of “earnest-white-middle-class university-student” I think the message would be stronger if they had used a variety of Canadians in different settings. But I agree, it’s time for Canadians to step up
